My email to Walmart, 16 Aug. 2002

"Local [man] giving out flags [to children] asked to leave Walmart".

This was a caption in the DICKSON HERALD, a local newspaper in Dickson Tn.

As a veteran I was shocked. As a customer, I think I'll shop elsewhere.

Firing this manager would be too lenient.

Please read the article at: www.willpete.com/flagman.htm and take appropriate action to remedy this disgrace to our Veterans, Citizens and Country.

Sincerely
Will Myers

Thank you for your message.

We appreciate your concern about the difficult situation in Dickson, TN.   This is what we faced there: an individual was passing out American flags to our customers in the store parking lot.  While we appreciated this man's patriotism, the fact we were receiving feedback from customers that the manner in which he was approaching people, made them uncomfortable.  As a result, our manager asked the gentleman politely to leave.  At that point, he became abusive and the manager felt like he needed to call the police.   The police arrived and escorted the gentleman from our premises.

Be assured, we regret that this situation occurred, especially since it involved our flag.  However, our stores must overreact in situations like these and put the interests of our customers first.

Our issue is not with this individual distributing flags, but rather the
manner in which he was received by our customers and the way he reacted to
our manager.

Thank you,
Customer Relations

My Response 21 Aug. 2002

Dear Customer Relations

Impressive the way you personalized your response to my email letter, which I thought sounded quite personal and serious.              Pitiful !!!

Mr. Humphreys is a well loved and well respected veteran in this town. I've run into him countless times and never saw anything inappropriate in his appearance or demeanor.

Your response to his treatment [my email] is very unsatisfactory to me.

Mr. Humphreys should have an open invitation to pass out flags with a center stage of convenience.

As you rest on your rhetorical laurels [bullshit], veterans have, are and will sacrifice there peace of mind, physical wholeness and their very lives for the FLAG CALLED FREEDOM.

I find it hard to believe that you appreciate my concern. And, you sure don't appear to appreciate freedom there at Walmart.

Sincerely,

Will Myers
