I was an RTO attached to 3rd battalion 3rd Marine Division (Reinforced)Mike Co. and Kilo Co. Who in turn would attach us to the 5th & 8th Battalion Vietnamese Air Borne Rangers at times. My US Army unit was in Dong HA, I seldom was at my unit; so I remember very little about it. I need help finding my FO-Lt, and Recon Sgt. Their names were Lt. Mentasona? and Sgt.E5 Ely Cooper. I was wounded and my Lt. put me in for the Silver star and Purple Heart. I have no evidence this ever took place, which is why I need to find my Lt. I am not sure of the spelling of his name. I believe he was from some where in pennsylvania. for the same action I was awarded the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Gold Star for valor and received it through the 3rd Marine Division (reinforced) Fleet Marine Force, signed by B. A. HOCHMUTH, Major General, U. S. Marine Corps. This is the only proof I have of the incident which led to our getting the Cross, and my being submitted for the Silver Star And Purple Heart.

Looking for anyone who served with my brother. He was a forward observer attached to marines. We're having difficulty getting military records and corroboration would be helpful. He's very ill and we might not get records in time. Suggestions welcome. Please contact his brother, Roger (me) at thompsrc@bp.com

I was with 1/40 from the start at Ft. Sill.  Then it was Oakland Army Terminal and the USS General LeRoy Eltinge to Da Nang.   Assigned to 3rd MAF and attached to 3rd Marine Div with OpCon to 12th Regiment.  Then convoy to Dong Ha via Hue/Phu Bai.   Operated in Quang Tri City, Cam Lo, Camp JJ Carrol, The Rockpile and up Highway 1 between Dong Ha and Gia Linh and Con Thien.  Spent last few months as Bn FDO.  Was there when we were building the Dong Ha base.  DEROSed shortly after the DIV ASP went up at Dong Ha.  Returned for a second tour with 1/11 of the 9th Div in the delta.
