Was Opn Sgt for six months and then I replaced 1st Sailor as 1st of Svc Btry till rotation.
I was a 1SG when I arrived in and was assigned to Hq, IFFV Arty in NaTrang, S3 section. Had a slight misunderstanding with the IFFV Arty SGM so he sent me to the DMZ. That is the best thing he could have done for me. For the first 30 days I was the acting S2 Sgt for 1/40 and then became the Opns Sgt. Major James E Thomas was the S3. Around the time of Khe Sanh I became the 1SG of Svc Btry. There were four Q4 radar detachments attached to Svc Btry and one of them was at Khe Sanh. It was quite a tour. Left there over 35 years ago and it seems like yesterday.
Would like information or to talk to anyone as I have'nt talked to anyone except David McKinney C Baty

I was the BAS NCOIC from Feb - Nov 68. The BAS Docs were CPT Williams and Kendall. I remember SP4 Gary Kuhm and SP4 Kenneth Moore. Occasionly I have had dreams of Dong Ha, returning there in my dreams and it being all grown up with weed and trash. I was a SGT when I arrived there and was promoted to SSG Sep 68. SSG Knight who I replaced as NCOIC was infused in Feb 68 and transferred to the Americal Div in Cho Lai. While I was with the 1/40th I had a three piece band and played and sang at the 12 Marine Arty Regiment Staff NCO and Officer's Club. Does anybody remember the boardwalk we build in the HHB area leading to the BAS? I remember HHB CO CPT Mackey and 1SG Owens. Does anybody remember when I accidently burned down one of the NCO Hooches in the summer of 68? I sure made a few NCO mad at me. James D. My batallion was attached to the 3rd MDIV in Dong Ha. We served at "The Rock Pile", Quang Tri, Gio Linh, and Camp Carrol. We had 105SP and the Bn fired over 500,000 rounds during our year in Viet Nam. The battalion received the PUC, Navy PUC, and MUC. Our men were the greatest! All for One!

Served as a cannoneer in a 105 self propelled battery. Dong Ha, Ca Lu, Rockpile, Con Thien, etc. Had a gun blown out from under me in 1967 by NVA artillery. Was ordered to drive the battery commander (Capt. ??) after an Article 15 for not wearing my flak jacket and steel pot while humping ammo into ammo bunker at 130 degrees in the shade.

I believe it was sometime in 1973 when we received directives to "restructure" which changed our unit designation from 6th BN 40th FA to 1st BN 40th FA. I don't remember the reason, nor if it made any difference to any of us.
